The impossible decision.

This is back to school August of 2015. My son was entering 4th grade. This is at our neighborhood bus stop.

Friday July 31st, I held a community conversation with parents about whether or not to send our kids back to school. We all agree staying home is safer for the greater good, but plenty of children need and benefit greatly from an in person learning environment. The flip side of that is we will be endangering ourselves (or perhaps grandparents who are caretakers) at home and others at school, including beloved teachers.

Even if we send our kids to school, their expectations of the in person experience are likely to be very different from the reality. And how many days before there is a confirmed case, and what happens next? Our local school districts are leaving it up to the County Health Departments.

My district, Bloomington Illinois District 87, wants an answer by August 4th. Tuesday. This is one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make.

Watch my town hall to hear all of the concerns we discussed.
